Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe has one of Africa's highest rates of grassroots Bitcoin use, shaped by years of hyperinflation and a chronic shortage of hard currency. Bitcoin is not legal tender, and the country's money system runs on the ZiG and the US dollar. The central bank barred banks from handling crypto in 2018, a stance it has gradually softened, and in 2024 authorities moved to draft a regulatory framework and launched a fintech sandbox. Peer-to-peer trading remains central to how Zimbabweans access bitcoin. Harare and Bulawayo host a small but determined Bitcoin community.
