El Salvador

In September 2021 El Salvador became the first country in the world to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender. The Bitcoin Law, championed by President Nayib Bukele, made BTC official currency alongside the US dollar and launched the government's Chivo wallet, backed by purchases of bitcoin for the national reserve. The movement began in the coastal village of El Zonte—known as Bitcoin Beach—where a circular bitcoin economy took root in 2019 and inspired the national policy. Today merchants across the country accept sats, often over the Lightning Network, and the community gathers for meetups in San Salvador and beyond; the planned Bitcoin City is intended to be a tax-friendly hub powered by geothermal energy. Bitcoin remains legal tender, though acceptance is uneven, and a 2024 IMF agreement led to the law being revised so private businesses are no longer required to accept it. Use this map to find the many places where you can spend sats and join El Salvador's pioneering Bitcoin economy.
