Japan

The pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin, Satoshi Nakamoto, chose a Japanese name, and Japan has been central to the currency's story ever since. Tokyo was home to Mt. Gox, the world's largest bitcoin exchange until its collapse in 2014, which at its peak handled roughly 70% of all global trades. In April 2017 Japan became one of the first major economies to formally recognize bitcoin as a legal method of payment under its amended Payment Services Act, with exchanges supervised by the Financial Services Agency. Large retailers began accepting BTC around the same time, and bitcoin is treated as property and taxed as miscellaneous income. Today a lively community keeps the ecosystem alive through meetups in Tokyo, Osaka and beyond, while exchanges and merchants continue to serve an active market in a country with a deep trading history.
