Iran

Iran is a major Bitcoin-mining country, drawing on heavily subsidized electricity, though seasonal power shortages have led to repeated bans on mining in peak-demand months. Bitcoin is not legal tender, and the rial remains the official currency. Since 2019 the government has licensed miners, and authorities have allowed domestically mined bitcoin to be used to pay for imports; unlicensed mining has been targeted with seizures and higher tariffs. US- and EU-led sanctions have cut Iran off from much of the global banking system, and the government has explored digital assets as an alternative channel for trade and settlement. Ordinary Iranians have also turned to bitcoin to hedge against the rial's decline. Tehran hosts a small but technically minded Bitcoin community.
