China
China was once the centre of gravity for Bitcoin: it hosted most of the world's mining hashrate and its earliest exchanges. That changed in September 2021, when regulators declared all crypto-related activities illegal and mining was effectively banned, triggering a mass migration of miners abroad. Holding bitcoin is not a criminal offence—courts have recognised it as property—but trading, exchanges and related services are prohibited, and the digital yuan is the state's official alternative. Enforcement varies, and peer-to-peer activity persists. Despite the restrictions, a resilient developer and user community keeps Bitcoin alive, while Hong Kong operates under its own licensing regime.
