Chile has one of Latin America's more mature Bitcoin markets, home to exchanges such as Buda and CryptoMKT that were founded in the mid-2010s. Bitcoin is legal, but not legal tender, and the peso remains the official currency. A Fintech Law that took effect in 2024 brought crypto service providers under the financial regulator, the CMF, and requires them to register. The tax authority treats bitcoin as an asset: trading gains are taxed as income, while crypto sales are not subject to VAT.
