The Central African Republic made headlines in 2022 by adopting Bitcoin as legal tender, becoming only the second country to do so, after El Salvador. Implementation has been uneven, and the CFA franc remains the practical currency. The regional central bank and the IMF pushed back, citing monetary sovereignty and financial-stability risks, and the government's Sango initiative has struggled to gain traction.
