Bhutan has quietly become one of the world's most surprising bitcoin holders, mining with abundant hydropower through its state investment arm, Druk Holding & Investments, since around 2019. Bitcoin is not legal tender, and the ngultrum remains the official currency. On-chain researchers have identified wallets linked to Bhutan holding thousands of bitcoin, making the kingdom—by some measures—one of the largest known state-level holders.
