The Netherlands has been a European Bitcoin pioneer for over a decade. Amsterdam is home to Bitonic, one of the continent's oldest bitcoin brokers, and hosts Bitcoin Amsterdam, one of Europe's largest Bitcoin-only conferences. The city of Arnhem is a standout: local shops along the Koningstraat—informally the Bitcoin Boulevard—accept bitcoin, part of a long-running effort to build a circular bitcoin economy. Regulation is clear, with service providers registering with the Dutch central bank. Taxwise there is no separate capital gains tax on bitcoin; instead holdings form part of the wealth-tax base in Box 3.
