Morocco has one of Africa's highest rates of grassroots Bitcoin use, even though the authorities declared crypto transactions illegal back in 2017. Bitcoin is not legal tender, and the dirham remains the official currency. Officials have warned that using virtual assets breaches exchange and anti-money-laundering rules, but enforcement has been light and peer-to-peer trading continues. In 2024 the central bank began preparing a law to regulate crypto assets, signalling a shift from prohibition toward oversight. Casablanca and Marrakech host a quiet but persistent Bitcoin community.
