Honduras has become an unexpected Bitcoin outpost: the Próspera special economic zone on Roatán recognised Bitcoin as legal tender in 2022, and a 'Bitcoin Valley' merchant initiative has taken root in Santa Rosa de Copán. Nationally, Bitcoin is legal, but not legal tender, and the lempira remains the official currency. The central bank has warned against crypto, and there is no nationwide licensing framework, so adoption outside these pockets remains limited and peer-to-peer.
