Guatemala has a growing grassroots Bitcoin scene, helped by a huge flow of remittances from the United States and a young population. Bitcoin is not legal tender, and the quetzal remains the official currency. The central bank has warned that crypto is not recognised, and there is no dedicated licensing regime, so adoption is mostly peer-to-peer and merchant-driven in places such as Antigua.
