Ethiopia
Ethiopia has emerged as an unexpected force in Bitcoin mining, with state-owned Ethiopian Electric Power signing deals to supply cheap hydroelectricity to miners and earn scarce foreign currency. Bitcoin is not legal tender, and the birr remains the official currency. The central bank has warned against crypto and does not recognise it as legal tender, and no dedicated law governs the sector. The mining push, however, has put the country on the global hashrate map with abundant renewable power. Addis Ababa hosts a small but growing Bitcoin community.
