Germany

Germany was one of the first major economies to give bitcoin a legal home, when the Federal Ministry of Finance classified it as private money back in 2013. Bitcoin is not legal tender, but it is legal to buy, hold and spend, and it is exempt from VAT when used as payment. The tax treatment is famously friendly: private investors who hold bitcoin for more than a year owe no capital gains tax on the sale, while shorter holdings are taxed as income. Regulated banks and custodians can offer bitcoin services, and Berlin's room77 pub has accepted bitcoin since the early days, making it one of the oldest bitcoin merchants anywhere. From Berlin and Munich to the Ruhr, meetups and merchant adoption keep the scene active in Europe's largest economy. Use this map to find the German places where you can spend sats.
