Switzerland
Switzerland has positioned itself as one of Europe's most Bitcoin-friendly countries, with the canton of Zug hosting a dense cluster of Bitcoin companies and foundations. Since 2016 the city of Zug has even accepted bitcoin for municipal tax payments. Rather than write bespoke rules, the Swiss financial regulator FINMA applies existing financial-market law to bitcoin businesses and issues guidance. Capital gains on bitcoin are generally tax-free at the federal level for private investors, though wealth and some cantonal taxes still apply. Cities lead the way: Lugano's Plan B has turned the lakeside city into a Bitcoin hub that accepts BTC for taxes, parking and public services, while meetups and companies in Zurich and Zug keep the community connected.
